Ikky¿'s Lost Scroll

The Zen historian Yanagida Seizan wrote: "To speak of Ikkyū is to speak of oneself." In this volume, Waldor speaks as Ikkyū. Something of Ikkyū's spirit can be recognized in Waldor's free verse. Here is one of my favorites: "I've always suspected / there is little difference / between temple and brothel. / Now that I am old I am sure / there is no difference, / and that's not to belittle one / place or the other." To channel the voice of another is a mystery almost in the religious sense.
