Reviewed by Conner (age 4) and Mom for Reader Views (3/08) Sara wonders what the world we be like if there were no "5, 4, 3, 2, or even 1" or if the cows and other farm animals quit their jobs. Our hands wouldn't be the same and stories would read differently. If the farm animals quit their jobs then we would have milk for cereal or eggs for breakfast. "Do you think we could be without the number 5?" "No, because six would make no sense." "Do you think we'd look alright with just one eye?" "No, silly!" "What would you do if the cows stopped making milk?" "I'd have hot chocolate instead." Parent's Comment: "I Wonder. . ." has very amusing illustrations to get the author's point across. It was a good exercise in thinking of other possibilities and to appreciate what we have. My son likes to know where things are, so discussing situations where things are changed helps him think of alternative ways of doing things.
Very unique, nicely done

I have three little boys, ages four and under, and they were really excited about this book. It clicked on the second reading (probably because it wasn't their usual trucks and trains fare), and started a cute little conversation about "what would happen if..." Most importantly, they determined that even if there were no cows to make milk, there would still be chocolate milk to drink! I like that it prompted thought and conversation, as well as had beautiful illustrations. This is a very unique, nicely done book.

I Wonder...why I didn't think of writing this book? What a great idea! This book appeals to the youngest children who will find delight in the rhythmic verse and adorable pictures to the older children whose imagination is developed enough to consider a world where there is no number 5! I Wonder...will there be more books from the author?

"I Wonder" is a creatively written (in rhyme!), well illustrated and fun to read book that encourages children to think about "cause and effect," using numbers and in a style that children will understand and enjoy. After we first read the book to our grandson, he added it to his "must" read list at bedtime. Many children's books tell a story, but "I Wonder" goes beyond just storytelling. It provides an opportunity for a parent or grandparent to talk to their child or grandchild about how ordinary events in our world are inter-related. Our congratulations to author Harriet Fishel on her delightful children's book!
