I See The Fire

George Junior comes to the fictionalised Spanish village of El Turrisco to reconnect with his ageing father after years marked by imprisonment, illness, estrangement, and damaging messages that entered the family and changed how he was understood. George believes he was wrongly treated, misidentified, and then followed by a false story that others accepted more readily than his own account. His father eventually begins to see that the messages were manipulative and blocks their source, but this late recognition cannot restore the lost years or erase the fracture between father, son, and sisters.
At the same time, George's body is failing under the accumulated pressure. Chronic fatigue, neurological illness, fear, and trauma make travel and ordinary obligations feel physically impossible. He is expected to return to England, attend meetings, visit a friend in prison, support other people, and continue proving that he is loving, reliable, and truthful. Instead, his body says no. Remaining in Spain becomes the first major act of the story: not a victory over others, but a refusal to keep injuring himself in order to satisfy their expectations.
As the book develops, George begins to understand that care is not the same as explanation, control, or grand declarations. Care appears through small actions: water, food, transport, presence, and his father quietly peeling mushrooms on a balcony after two strokes. Their relationship is not fully repaired, and the family conflict does not disappear, but George learns to hold love and failure together without returning to the old courtroom of accusation. The story ends with him choosing distance, boundaries, and the right not to answer every rumour-the beginning of a life in which he no longer has to prove himself by walking back into the fire.
