He's never had a girlfriend. I've never been low-maintenance.

The first time I meet Scott Hughes, he won't let me return a dress.

In my defense, it cost eight hundred dollars. In his, the shop is closed.

I'm used to people making exceptions for me. The Fairmont Wolves' enormous, infuriatingly quiet center seems prepared to let me be disappointed.

Unfortunately, I'd rather like to kiss him.

Since losing his parents, Scott has spent years looking after his four younger siblings. They get his time, his attention, and a say in what's for dinner.

I'm an only child. I have some adjusting to do.

His sisters make that surprisingly easy. His brothers like me, too, although getting either of them to admit it may require legal representation. All four are protective of the man who's been there for them.

Then I start getting to know him for myself. He remembers what I tell him. He does what he says he'll do. And his idea of kissing me goodnight makes it very difficult to let him leave.

Soon I'm looking forward to his sisters' messages and lingering in his kitchen after dinner. For someone whose parents consider a bank transfer an adequate birthday celebration, being wanted takes some getting used to.

So does being told no by people who still want me around.

I want Scott. I want his family. I'm beginning to want things I can't simply buy, arrange, or insist upon.

The trouble is, those are the only methods I've had much practice with.

Scott's never had a girlfriend. I'd hate to be the reason he regrets it.
