The musings and anecdotes in the following pages are a joint effort by my daughter and me to capture the humor and the heartaches of raising and being raised amidst a blessed but often over-indulgent society. My perspective as a mom and hers as either a daughter or a nanny hopefully provide insights from many angles. My husband and I love spending time with our adult children, and they actually enjoy hanging out with us. How did that happen? We did not try to be their "friends" growing up. That was not our job, but it is now our privilege. There are thousands of fine lines to toe, including the one between pouring out parental love and creating a sense of entitlement, or the thread of a line between encouraging and enabling your children. Holly and I brainstormed both specific topics and universal issues and had no problems coming up with examples from our family. The stories are mostly true; only the illustrations used in "By the Hour" are embellished scenarios, which fall well within the possibilities of reality and were included to drive home a point. Either Holly or Diana is specified below the titles as author of each account. Although some chapters are more heavily weighted with contributions by one of us than the other, it balances out by the last page. We have received official permission from the four men we either call father, husband, brother, or son to relay the episodes of our family life. We were relatively nice, as they also can tell a good tale, and we may be the subject of one of their books some day. Forrest, however, is still holding out for royalties as the inspiration for our title. Since our observations and experiences serve as the basis of our knowledge rather than pedigreed titles or advanced diplomas, we have created a website at www.ididntseemedoit.com to offer opportunities for contrasting opinions or like-minded comments by anyone who has graciously picked up our book. We welcome your thoughts and perspectives.
