Deborah was an Old Testament judge and prophetess. She led the nation of Israel during the time after Joshua led the nation into the Promised Land and before the Jewish monarchy was established with Israel's first king, Saul. Some of the judges who led Israel were good judges. When they led the nation, the people and the land prospered. When judges were bad, the people fell away from God and God allowed their enemies to oppress them and then raised up a good judge to redeem His people and bring them back to faithfulness. Deborah was a good judge. Additionally, she was a prophetess who not only spoke God's word, she was also His mouthpiece-He spoke to the people through her. As a judge during a period of God's redemption, Deborah accompanied the Israelite army into battle. Her action, along with her faithfulness, gave the people assurance of victory. Deborah was not only a judge and prophetess, she was also a warrior woman. How might God see His women of faith today as He saw Deborah? How might our character or circumstances be similar to that judge who ruled Israel with integrity and faithfulness? This is Deborah's story. It is also ours, when we have faith like hers.
