I have been trying to find this book for years. It was my favorite when I was a little girl. I loved the imaginary adventure on the boat. Especially with a girl captain! A bit unique in the early 70's! Just found it again this week- and it's every bit as good as I remembered. It just proves that sometimes a paper hat and a bar of soap can be as much fun as the expensive interactive toys that kids have today (or more)!
Hurray for a Child's Imagination
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 21 years ago
Little Jane wins three packages at a party and brings them home to show to her brother Simon. The first package contains jelly beans, the second a sailor's hat made of paper and the third a bar of soap. Sadly (and that's why I took away a star), Jane refuses to share the jellies with her brother, nor does she share the hat or soap. Instead she eats the jelly beans, then takes a bath. She floats the hat in the tub and imagines it's an oceanliner and she is the captain. And she imagines the soap is an iceberg. The imaginary crew begs her to turn the ship, but instead she hoses down the soapy iceberg, thus making bubbles and saving the day. The story ends with her back in the bath.Ah, isn't a child's imagination something? And the beautiful illustrations by Emily McCully are to die for. My two-year-old niece, Cassie, just loves pointing out the boat, soap, fish and birds. Too bad about the not sharing business though. Four stars from Captain Katie.
