Review of just "Immortal Ops" by Mandy M. Roth

Immortal Ops, a series by Mandy M. Roth, currently consisting of three entries, is a series in the original sense of the word. That is, there is one story being told over an (unknown) number of volumes, and each entry in the series carries a part of the story. (The other two volumes are Immortal Ops: Critical Intelligence (Book 2) and Immortal Ops: Radar Deception (Book 3).) Why break this story up in pieces? Because the individual books that make up the Immortal Ops series are individual futuristic romances. Thus, while each entry tells a part of the overall story, each entry contains a full and complete romance in addition to a piece of the longer story. Immortal Ops, Book 1, simply entitled "Immortal Ops" is a novella found in the three-author anthology, "Hunters". In the sense that this novella is a complete romance, it is about Lukian, head of the Immortal Ops team, and Peren, a woman who the Immortal Ops team has been hired to kill. The Immortal Ops team is a six-man military-type unit composed of various sorts of immortals (more like near-immortals, since they can die, just not easily). While other types of immortals exist, such as vampires and the Fae, the Immortal Ops team are all shapeshifters (weres) of various types. Only Lukian is a natural born shapeshifter, a lycanthrope (werewolf). The other five became shapeshifters either as the result of an attack where shifter DNA was transferred during a bite, or as a result of experimental injections with small amounts of shifter DNA. As a result, the other five men in the Immortal Ops team break down as follows: one more lycanthrope (he was injected with Lukian's DNA), two werepanthers, and, somewhat by accident, one weretiger and one wererat. They are an extremely secret organization, and have one liaison from whom they get their orders. This liaison, the Colonel, is in touch with both the regular military organizations and the federal government. He analyses and reviews requests for action, and decides the missions the Immortal Ops team will take on. As mentioned earlier, the mission the Immortal Ops team is attempting to complete at the opening of the first novella, "Immortal Ops" is to kill the authorized target, Peren. The team leaves the whys of each mission up to their Colonel so they can concentrate on carrying it out, so as the novella begins they have no reason to believe that anything is wrong with their mission objective. Soon after the story opens, though, Lukian, who is highly perceptive, senses that something is wrong with the mission itself (killing Peren) and aborts. Instead, he decides that Peren and her two girlfriends need protection while he finds who this mission came from and why. This is the beginning of the overall story of Immortal Ops and the smaller story of Lukian and Peren. Being a romance, of course, we know that Lukian and Peren end up together.
