This book is SMART & HELPFUL. Nancy Gruver knows what it takes to raise confident girls (not an easy task!) Her book gives practical hints that you can use and re-use for many years of parenting. A very unique and most helpful resource.

A great place to start a conversation

I have liked, How To Say It to Girls; Communication with Your Growing Daughter by Nancy Gruver. This book gives a parents (of boys or girls) talking points on a wide variety of topics that are broken out by child's age 1-7yrs and 8-13yrs. It covers issues like, anger, cliques, courage, as well as sexuality, pornography and much, much more. There must be 80 or more topics to talk to your kids about. I am shareing a bit of one of the more challenging topics. The Pornography section says, "Media and marketing are using more pornographic imagery and manipulating healthy sexuality into crass titillation to sell products...The challenge of parents is threefold. One, we must not put our heads in the sand and pretend that these images and messages aren't visible...two, we must clearly tell our kids that perverse use of sexuality is wrong and openly challenge those who pervert it for profit. Third, we must "walk the talk" in our own lives. The book goes into language to use with the young person, like, "Sexuality is not about how much skin you show. It is about making a connection with yourself and others spiritually, emotionally and physically. Now, every parent can custom fit the comments they use with their own child to match their own family values, but it is a good starting point.
