Giacomo Puccini created an opera, Turandot, that incorporates many Chinese elements, even though he had never been to China. This work examines the following aspects: the level of knowledge about China possessed by Puccini and his collaborators, the Chinese historical and cultural elements in the opera, the origin of the original Chinese melodies in the opera and the way they are used, and it compares the musical aesthetic concepts in Europe and China.
