heartbreaking but realistic

This book details how and why a child dies, but in the weaving of the story, it explains the impact of widespread alcoholism on a culture. Not a fun or easy read but a good one. This gives insight into why the problems exist on the reserve systems, why they are harming the very people they hoped to help and preserve and what should be considered in any rational approach to this problem. It is sympathetic to the problems faced by native people trying to escape the negative aspects of alcohol in a culture without losing their cultural heritage and all the good things that go along with being native.
