sweet contemporary romance

Trying to start over following the death of his wife during a stakeout, widower Sterling Dodge accompanied by his four year old son Tyler, his fourteen-year-old brother-in-law Joel Atwater and Joel's older sister Lauren relocate from New York for St. Ignace, Michigan. His upstairs neighbor, Coast Guard Lieutenant Megan Benton welcomes the foursome to the neighborhood. However, Sterling stays aloof and grumpy; the teens are angry and glowering making it clear they do not want to be at the end of the earth; Tyler is the exception friendly and welcoming. Unable to resist, Meg reacts to Sterling's cantankerousness with impishness to drive him further up the wall. He finds to his chagrin a desire for her to sass him even more and pushes her buttons to do so. That is in spite of his reluctance to become involved with a woman whose occupation means danger just like that of his late wife Blythe. Still Meg offers HOT CHOCOLATE ON A COLD DAY to the newcomers especially Sterling even though he like the teens want to reject her. This sweet contemporary romance lives up to its title as the lead couple are a nice pairing of two likable individuals. The story line also contains subplots involving Meg's family especially her brother who fled the academic roost. The support cast provides conflict or matchmaking, but clearly this Upper Peninsular tale is owned by the sassy heroine and her reluctant fire dragon. Harriet Klausner

Great sequel!

HOT CHOCOLATE ON A COLD DAY by Roz Denny Fox April 12, 2006 HOT CHOCOLATE ON A COLD DAY is a continuation of two books that Roz Denny Fox penned a number of years ago: ANYTHING YOU CAN DO and HAVING IT ALL, which were reissued earlier this year. This third book takes place about eleven years later, with the teenagers from the first two books being the focus in this most current story, now young adults in their 20's. Megan Benton started off as a rebellious teenager, but with the help of her new stepfather "Camp" and her mother Emily she has changed her ways. She is now a responsible adult working for the Coast Guard in northern Michigan (St Ignace), where winters are horrifically cold. Her younger brother Mark has come to visit, and the two of them get involved with her new neighbors downstairs, the mysterious Dodge Sterling, his 4-year old son Tyler, and Dodge's deceased wife's two teenage siblings, Joel and Lauren. Megan and Mark's cousin through their mother's marriage to Camp, Keith Locke, also makes a surprise visit to check up on Megan and Mark. Mark, by the way, is trying to get as far away from his parents as possible, because of his decision to not accept a potential counseling job at Wellmont College, where both parents work. He instead wants to become a photographer. Neither parent is happy about it. And Grandmother Mona Benton may have interfered yet again with her grandchildren's lives by backing up Mark's decision to change careers. The focus of HOT CHOCOLATE is mainly on Megan, (who has an obsession over hot chocolate!) and her relationship with Dodge, a very angry man whose life remains a mystery to his neighbors. Megan does her best to make these newcomers feel right at home, but only succeeds to anger Dodge. It is Mark that makes some headway and befriends Lauren, who along with her 14-year old brother Joel, resents Dodge's role in their lives, despite the fact that they have no one else to turn to for guidance. Lauren and Joel's parents were murdered, and it was Dodge's interest in their older sister Blythe that brought them to Michigan. They wish they were back home in New York, always plotting ways to return. It's with Mark's help that Megan learns what brought Dodge Sterling to this part of the country, and what he is running away from. HOT CHOCOLATE ON A COLD DAY continues the story of the Bentons and the Campbells, focusing mainly on the younger three, Megan, Mark and Keith. Megan however is the standout character, the woman who tries to get to the heart of the family downstairs, and at the same time seems to always be the one who is trying to keep the peace among her own family. Megan also finds that Tyler, Dodge's young son, has grown attached to her, causing potential problems for both Megan and Dodge down the road. Dodge has no intentions of sticking around. He has already purchased a home but it is not in move-in condition, therefore he's renting the downstairs apartment temporarily. His past relationship with
