Everything I Love About Poetry

Homespun and Angel Feathers completely amazed me. I found myself taking pictures of pages and sending them to friends constantly throughout my reading because I just had to say,“LOOK AT THIS, ISN’T IT WONDERFUL?!” I loved how grounded and textured the poems were, yet how easily they seemed connected with heaven. Darlene Young’s voice is so clear and soft and strong and reading these poems was truly an incredible experience. This is the exact kind of poetry I feel I have been missing. This is poetry for those who think they don’t like poetry. This is poetry for people who have studied poetry for years. Most especially, this is the art the Mormon community so dearly needs right now. The bared soul and embracing of the uncomfortable is so perfectly what I needed at this moment. I just want to find every LDS woman I can and give them all this gorgeous book because it finally made me, a young Mormon woman who can’t quite find her place at church, feel like I was seen and understood. Through the themes explored here, I felt an unspeakable sisterhood both with my contemporary sisters and the ones who came before me. Poetry to me should take the ordinary and make it beautiful and take the divine and expose its beauty and Homespun and Angel Feathers did all those things easily, plus so much more. I never served an LDS mission but I would consider doing so if it meant I could take this book with me and somehow do justice in presenting the centuries of nuance it carries.
