The corset that held London to a murmur is folded on a chair, kept and useless. His ribs will not take the lacing, and the workshop that has drawn his stays his whole working life has been bought out by a trust with no findable trustee. Then Ifeoma Okpara wakes in Peckham with a psychopomp's mark at the back of her neck that nobody called. She is twenty-three, an archive cataloguer, and by the third day she can see the dead on her own stairs and cannot move a single one of them on. Bran reaches her flat before the Met does and understands the whole shape of it in the doorway. The mark is his. It was put there. It cannot be taken off.
Something has stopped searching the records for his successors and learned to make them surface on command.
The crate under the desk in Bloomsbury runs back past 1966 - two sleeves from Bristol, dated the winter before Bran ever came to London - and carries a third notation in a hand nobody knows. In a Bermondsey hospice the last man who might have read it gets two syllables of a name out before the transit closes over him.
And Dr Adam Quire does not break in, does not threaten, and does not ask for anything. He explains. Then he shows Caspar a method that makes the noise stop, and leaves the offer open.
It works. It is the first thing Caspar has not told Bran since the terms were spoken.
