Desmond Wilkes has one problem, and it is his hands. Signs that say DO NOT TOUCH are basically invitations. Wet paint? He has to check. Velvet rope? He has to duck it. His cousin Junie keeps a little green notebook of every single thing he has ever broken, and the list is getting long.

So when Desmond finds a WET PAINT card taped to the twelve-foot fiberglass clown at Putt-A-Round Adventure Golf on the last night of the summer season, his palm is already on that cracked painted cheek before Junie can finish saying his name.

The paint isn't wet. The clown is cold as a freezer. And half the floodlights are burned out, so the whole course comes in stripes of bright and dark, bright and dark.

Which is a problem. Because the things standing in the dark are not standing where they were a minute ago.

A gorilla with chipped knuckles. A smiling whale. A clown with one clouded glass eye. They never move when you're watching. They only shuffle closer when nobody is keeping score. Junie's notebook fills up fast, and every page says the same thing: closer, closer, closer.
