This episode finds Skye Fargo in Washington Territory in 1860.This is just before the start of the Civil War when settlers were starting to make their treks along the Oregon Trail which led from Independence Missouri to Oregon. When settlers headed out they better be well equipped and lead by an experienced, honest Scout. This particular group had neither. Luckily, after they had been robbed by their scout and left defenceless, inexperienced and with little to no hope of survival;along comes The Trailsman. What we get here is a great story of struggle and survival. It doesn't come easy.Fargo is faced with as hopeless a situation as he has ever come up against. They get caught in a snowbound canyon by an early winter storm and must find a way to survive the winter with no guns to protect themselves, except Fargo's,and limited supplies along with a need to find better shelter than their wagons could provide. It seems they might have a chance when Skye finds an abandoned fort, but the appearance of a mosster of unbelievable strength and cunning seems bent on their destruction shows up. When things seem as bad as they can get;the band of a dozen or so well armed outlaws, who had earlier robbed them show up. Now we get a fight to the finish ,filled with lots of action and odds of survival that seem unsurmontable in conditions that are as bad as they can get. The old adage of "Things were never so bad that they couldn't get worse";seems to be the order of the day. This all results in a well written saga that shows why this series has continued to entertain its fans for all these years. The excellent artwork on the cover shows the country and elements faced in this story.
