It begins on a warm July night in Edinboro, Pennsylvania. Sixteen-year-old Cole Mercer and his four best friends are playing one last round of hide and seek. Then the voices stop. The crickets go silent. One by one, his friends disappear.
And something starts to hunt him.
Cole wakes up safe in bed, with dirt under his fingernails.
The nightmare comes back every month, and every month it gets closer. Years pass. His senses sharpen. His nights go missing. The dogs on his street won't stop staring. The people who love him begin to look at him with fear.
So he writes everything down in a journal, and the more he writes, the more terrifying the pattern becomes.
Some games can't be won by hiding. And some nightmares don't end until you finally turn around.
