A Warm and Poetic Book on Growth

Yes, this is published by Hazelden, and yes, it has the word 'sobriety' in the subtitle, but do not be misled--this is a book that reaches far beyond the bounds of 'recovery' literature. In fact, that Bill Alexander is a sober alcoholic is more of a sidelight to his personal story than the thematic focus of the book. If you are in a recovery program, for whatever ills, there are many positive pages for you in this book, but in no way is the audience exclusive to 'recovery.' Alexander does occasionally quote Bill W., but he's just as likely to quote Leonard Cohen, Chinese poet T'ao Ch'ien, Theodore Roethke, or Son House. This is a book about spiritual growth--a loving, giving book akin Scott Peck's The Road Less Travelled, augmented by the gentle nature of a Buddhist monk rather than the intellectual psychology of Dr. Peck. Bill Alexander is a writer, and a talented prose stylist. Simply stated, Hi, I'm Bill and I'm Old is a wonderful writer sharing his hope, strength, and experience with fellow travelers on the journey (alcoholism not required.)
