Foreword The title of this booklet is the greeting that the admission clerk into the infusion center would say to Kim each and every time we arrived. Little did she know the boost that greeting gave my lovely wife. I will forever be indebted to her for the smiles she put on Kim's face. We walked into that center more times than I can count. Some mornings Kim felt strong. Some mornings she did not. Either way, before the labs, before the chair, before whatever the day was going to take from her, a woman at the desk looked up and said, Hey pretty lady. It was a small sentence. It was also a gift. Kim's face would change. For a moment she was not a diagnosis walking in with a caregiver and a bag. She was a pretty lady being welcomed. I never wanted that greeting to live only in the doorway of an infusion center. It belongs on the cover of the story she walked through. If you work a desk like that, or you sit in a chair like Kim's, know that the first words in the room can carry a person farther than you think. What follows is how we got there, what we learned, and what I wish someone had handed me on Valentine's Day 2020. It is one husband's account. It is not a medical manual. Protocols change. Your team knows your person's numbers. Use what helps. Leave what does not. Ask the doctors before you change a thing. And if you happen to be that clerk: thank you. You are in these pages on purpose. - David Cole
