See the World in a New Way

I love books that challenge my kids. Especially when they stimulate their imagination and help them to look at the world in a different way. Arlene Alda's book does just that. In "Here a Face, There a Face" she anthropomorphises every day things like pots and sinks; so that a moss covered tree appears to be whistling some tunes (more images at the website), and a building with large round windows and decorative carvings looks like it is peering out at the world from under lovely eyebrows. The artwork ranges from cute to lovely, and is nearly always surprising. Check this book out and maybe like us you'll be trying to find, and even make!, your own creations. There are many ways to see a face, not just on people or animals, but in inanimate objects in many forms. On the cover of this book you can see a robotic-like face in the faucets and drain of a bathroom sink smiling at you. In the pages of this book you'll find many more. In the pattern of a carpet you can see one "looking up." There are many faces looking in different directions. You can see one in the floor, there is one in a backflow valve, one in a pot with the cover all askew and of course there is a bright and sunny one when you fry up a few eggs in a frying pan! There is a stern face on some hard bread crust, an ancient looking face on a boulder, there are some on the Yodock barriers (keep out!) and a wide-eyed one gracing the side of a building. There's a hairy one covering a plant pot and a crying one in a fountain. There are faces that make sounds, funny ones, ones that "whistle tunes" . . . there are many different kinds of faces around us. Can you find some fun, funny and fanciful faces around your house? This is a very imaginative book with some amazing photographs, each capturing an unusual "face" in some unusual places. Young children (and big ones too!) will enjoy turning these pages to find yet another unusual face. The text, though very simple, has a poetic lilt to it. "Upside down, Right side up . . . daydreams fill my head. Look there goes a fluffy pig . . . floating towards its bed." What kinds of faces do you see in the clouds?
