In 2008, an Irish Ranger entered the furnace of Helmand Province, keeping a journal to record patrols, firefights, and the relentless grind of war. Lee recalls his experiences on Operation Herrick 8 in the summer of 2008, one of the most kinetic and bloodiest periods for the British Army in Helmand. He reveals the patrols, ambushes, room clearances, IEDs, suicide bombers, Russian mines, and "blue on blues," as well as the loss of comrades in combat and the fog of war that descends on the battlefield. Dark humour is what helps suppress the horror; this is the British soldier's way of dealing with trauma. Lee operated with many NATO nations, providing telecommunications and Electronic Counter Measures support to the Czech Special Operations Group and US Special Forces. He was the telecommunications expert for multiple tactical and operational locations in the Gereshk Valley for 1 R IRISH and the Operational Mentoring Liaison Teams for 16 Air Assault Brigade. Lee's role changed dramatically during the second half of the tour, when he mentored an Afghan National Army Kandak in the Gereshk Valley and the Nad-e-Ali district. Throughout the tour, the enemy tried to kill him and his mates. He lost friends in combat and destroyed the enemy; physically he survived, but mentally it took its toll. These revelations are brutal and honest, shining a light on the issues experienced by soldiers who served in Helmand. In the book's final section, Lee's wife, Rachel, reflects on the soldier he was before the desert and the man he became after--showing the courage it takes to wait and the strength required to face the man who came home. Their roller-coaster journey as a military family and the unseen battles at home are openly discussed and can bring hope to anyone.
