Dave is proud to serve in the US Navy, and he's proud to be Jewish, but wearing a kippah instead of a sailor's hat is against the rules. When Dave breaks this rule in front of his new captain, he is surprised when the only question is, "What do you need to be Jewish on this ship?"
With the understanding and support of his captain, Dave finds ways to be true to both his beliefs and his job. But how can he celebrate Shabbat when there's no challah on the ship or on any ship in the whole Pacific Ocean? He has to make it himself. When he starts baking his own challah for Shabbat, everyone on the ship wants some--and he bakes enough for the sailors on a nearby ship, too
Including definitions of Jewish military terminology throughout, this picture book based on a true story will appeal to military families, people who (like Dave) "wear many hats," and everyone who loves challah
