Hearth Stone Tales: A Condensed History of Greenfield, MA

The Study of the history of our town has made it seem that there might be written many stories both interesting and instructive, about different places and happen-ings.

One day, talking with Miss Ashley, librarian, she stressed the need of this simplicity for the use of the public school pupils especially in the grades. So we planned this work. Many of you know that in the old houses there were large fireplaces with a wide hearth-stone in front, laid out into the floors. Here the work for the family was carried on in the day, and at night every one sat about it. Sometimes friends joined the family.

The Greenfield Public Library was one of these fine old houses and it invites you to gather about its hearthstones and learn all that you can from the tales there told. It has invited guests to meet you. Mother Deerfield will be there with her story. Daughter Gill will have some interesting things to tell. Our neighbor Turners Falls, where one of our old industries has gone, will also have something for you.

Now these things about which you will hear, have come from books so old that their worn and torn pages had to be covered with silk to save them; from the old paper, the Greenfield Gazette and Courier; from the books of old friends, the late Judge F. M. Thompson, Hon. and Mrs. George Sheldon of Deerfield, and others; from the various localities, even the streets and people of Greenfield.
