Growing up in a middle-class Italian family in the same city and time period the book is set in, I can relate to the characters and setting the author describes. This is a great coming of age story the whole family can read. There are so many lessons about dealing with loss, growing up, and overcoming adversity that kids and adults alike will like the story. You don't have to love baseball to enjoy Heart Of The Hide. That said, there really was a time when every day revolved around family dinners and playing ball all day with the kids in the neighborhood.
Don't miss this fantastic read!!

I'm an avid reader, and this was one of the best books I've had the pleasure to read in quite some time. It's a book the whole family can enjoy, and we all did! Don't be fooled by the young boy with a baseball glove on the front, it's more than "just" a baseball story for kids. It's a deep story about friendships, family and a loyalty that goes beyond the norm. Who can't remember the days gone by when the biggest problem was who's team is beating who on the baseball diamond? Mr. Petrucci's story will bring you back to the time of innocence when scoring that one run meant everything, and the friends beside you on the field were just as much family as the one's you sat down to eat dinner with each night. Coming from a middle class Italian background, and yes, West Haven, Connecticut myself, I can tell you first hand this story is spot on. My only complaint is that the sequel isn't out yet!

Heart of the Hide A friend gave me this book and as soon as I read the flap I was hooked. This story will take you through the gamut of emotions....from laughing out loud to wiping away a tear. The author is so "right on" about some of the problems and joys growing up in a middleclass, mostly italian, mostly catholic neighborhood in the 70s.... though it's message is timeless. Thanks Lou for taking me back to a part of my life that was much simpler and so much less complicated. I am anxiously awaiting the next effort from this author.

A story that hits home!! I also could not put this book down! I grew up in the city Petrucci bases his book on and am the daughter of one of the teachers mentioned in the Acknowledgements. It was a joy to read and identifiy with the people and places. My father has sinced passed away, and yes Lou, it does him justice!!! Thank you!!!

This book has special meaning to me because my husband and 4 year old son both have cleft lip and palate. My husband especially relates to growing up and feeling different, but having big dreams. Thanks for telling your story!
