"Healing Back and Joint Injuries" by Joseph Valdez, MD Review by Kathie Albertson, L. Ac. Dr. Valdez discusses the effectiveness of prolo therapy- a natural healing method used via injection of natural substances to support and rebuild ligaments and tissue. Prolo therapy has been around since the 1940's. Wikipedia states: "Proliferative Injection Therapy involves injecting an otherwise non-pharmacological and non-active irritant solution into the body, generally in the region of tendons or ligaments for the purpose of strengthening weakened connective tissue and alleviating musculoskeletal pain. It is also known as "proliferation therapy" or "regenerative injection therapy." As of 2005, the Mayo Clinic began supporting prolotherapy. They first learned of prolotherapy through C. Everett Koop's interest in the treatment. Mayo Clinic doctors list the areas that are most likely to benefit from prolotherapy treatment: ankles, knees, elbows, and the sacroiliac joint located in the lower back. They report that "unlike corticosteroid injections -- which may provide temporary relief -- prolotherapy involves improving the injected tissue by stimulating tissue growth." This book encourages use of natural healing methods. It describes what pain and injury does to the body and how we can permanently heal this damage. Why isn't it used by modern medicine? It's simple--- it is cheap and effective! Pharmaceutical companies, orthopedic, or physical therapy offices don't profit as much from using this therapy. As a practitioner of acupuncture and holistic medicine, I personally used it and it worked unbelieveably well on pain I had from 3 degenerated discs. It worked better for me than disc decompression. Does it work for everybody...of course not... I know of nothing that works for everyone, but I feel it should be incorporated along with, or before sterioid injections, which are hard on your liver and kidneys. This book will better help you understand your options. I was thrilled to see it on the book shelves. Prolo has no knows side effects. I encourage you to learn more about it from this book and to seek out those doctors that use it. Avoid uncessaray surgery! And get back the quality of life you deserve. I received a complimetnary copy for review.
Healing Back and Joint Injuries

Reviewed by Randy A. Lakin for [...] (08/09) I'm not a doctor, but having had a bad back for nineteen years I have learned a lot. I have to say that Doctor Joseph Valdez's book, "Healing Back and Joint Injuries", was a delight to read. Dr. Valdez breaks the information down so it is easy to understand, unlike some books written by doctors where you need a dictionary to understand them. "Healing Back and Joint Injuries" starts at the very beginning with basic terms and illustrations. When Dr. Valdez talks about a bad back or a knee joint he includes drawings that shows all the parts and their names. I have seen a lot of medical books written by medical professionals that assume you have been to medical school, not so with Dr. Valdez. In his book, "Healing Back and Joint Injuries", Dr. Valdez describes a medical procedure that a lot of us have not heard about, and that procedure is called Prolotherapy. Prolotherapy therapy is short for proliferative therapy, also known as reconstructive therapy or a type of regenerative injection therapy. Dr. Valdez does an excellent job of explaining the process in his book. The short version is that a solution is injected into various locations depending on what problems you are having. At which point the solution stimulates the body natural response to injury, and causes the body to begin the natural process towards healing. "Healing Back and Joint Injuries", starts out by explaining what it means to be injured. Dr. Valdez gives you a brief explanation of Anatomy 101 as he calls it. Then he move into explaining what pain is and heads towards giving you an understanding of the first steps of healing. My personal opinion of Dr. Valdez's book, "Healing Back and Joint Injuries"; that it is one of the best ones on the market, and I have read several in the nineteen years since my initial back injury. If you are looking for a good book that will explain the what's and how's of your injury, or if you are looking for a good book that explains the different types of treatment and procedures then look no further. "Healing Back and Joint Injuries", will give you all that information in one book. This is one book that is a must have for anyone with a back or joint injury, and I should know because I have had both and I only wish Dr. Valdez had written this book back in 1990 instead of 2009.

Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (7/09) After three sets of spinal epidural injections and one set of trigger point injections, I am still frustrated from chronic pain and time lost from work due to medical treatments and being unable to do my normal activities. Tomorrow, I have another appointment with a neurologist to review MRI results of my neck, unless, of course, the appointment is rescheduled again. I have been dealing with these frustrations since I was in a car accident in September of last year. I was thrilled to be able to get my hands on this book, especially the night before I have the doctor appointment; so thrilled in fact that I read it in one sitting. Probably not the best thing for my neck, but I feel much more armed with information that can give me an explanation of what I am going through and possible options for alternative treatments, especially if surgery is mentioned. Dr. Valdez has done an excellent job in describing a variety of injuries, medical tests, and options for treating the pain. I found his material to be very comprehensive and easy to understand. He uses many visual examples to further illustrate his explanations. While he is very positive about the benefits of prolotherapy, he discusses the pros and cons of all types of treatments and when they should be used in conjunction with each other. Prolotherapy is a new term for me. It refers to "a series of drug-free injections into and around injured joints to stimulate the body's natural healing response and repair and strengthen tendons and ligaments. Prolotherapy works best on people with soft tissue injuries. Dr. Valdez discusses many cases in which this treatment was very effective for patients. Many of these patients had already undergone surgery which resulted in more pain for them. In addition to educating oneself on this subject, Dr. Valdez also provides information so that the reader knows if they would benefit from this therapy and then how to follow through with it by locating a doctor that does this type of treatment. People who are dealing with chronic pain must read this book, "Healing Joint and Back Injuries," by Joseph Valdez, MD. Educating oneself should be the first step of any treatment. The next step is following through with a plan of action that will provide the best results. Being that prolotherapy is relatively noninvasive as opposed to surgery I would hope that most people would be able to try this treatment first. It definitely gives me some hope for a pain free future!
