He Only Knocked Once

The sole of his worn leather Spat boot fell across the threshold of her home with a loud thud. At that moment she felt a coldness blanket the room and knew instantly she had made a mistake.

"My husband will be home any minute now. I should warn you.," her voice trembled.

Harley knew exactly where John was at that very moment and wished he were here with them, it would have brought him so much more delight. Missy continued barking viciously but the man gave her only a cursory glance.

"Missy ," Shannon scolded as she turned back to the stranger. She ignorantly held onto her faith, hoping desperately that she was doing the right thing for the man.

"Thank you for helping this old soul from the terrible chill of the night. I don't know what I would have done. I don't even know where I am.," he said innocently as he raised his head to look at her.
