Missouri became a state on August 10, 1821, and is now home to over 6 million people. The state's rich history has created ample opportunities for ghosts to linger in its many haunted places.

The state had the third most Civil War battles in the Union, behind only Tennessee and Virginia. Twenty-nine battles raged within the state's borders; two had unusually high casualty numbers. The number of skirmishes numbered in the thousands. All that death has surely attracted some spirits with unfinished business to attend to.

Often called the 'Gateway to the West, ' Missouri was home to Jesse James and his gang of outlaws. There was no shortage of train robbers and merciless bushwhackers like "Bloody Bill" Anderson and Sam Hilderbrand.
