Good Introduction With Broad Coverage

I'm a practicing database and system engineer. In this book, "system" means application software and databases. Technical material favors the PC world over UNIX. Book has 61 articles in 12 sections: Management & Planning; Development Strategies; Tools, Tips, & Practices; Programming Techniques; Database Functionality & Design; Operating Platforms; Networking & Connectivity; Testing S/W Applications; Quality & Productivity Initiatives; Leveraging Staff Resources; Supporting Existing Software; Postdevelopment Administration. Useful index. With this many topics in one volume, each article is necessarily shallow. About 1/4 of contributors are from academia. Most contributors are from the US. I had never heard the names of any contributors before reading the book.
