Grace Burns' fan is missing. It is a beautiful lavender fan with gold trim and a long tassel. Grace believes that the fan, a gift from her relatives on her last trip to China with her now-deceased husband, was stolen. Others in the retirement community have reported items missing as well. Since the facilities managers will not take these reports seriously, everyone knows that people over sixty-five are just forgetful; Melinda Martin, Porsche North, Heather Stanton, and Grace Burns decide to combine their puzzle-solving skills and figure out what is happening to these missing items. While working to expose the thief, the women find themselves involved in the pursuit of a gang leader the police have been pursuing for years. They also help the police pursue an online dating scam and the attempted murder of a local college professor, a person Melinda knew years before. Although they eventually resolve most of their questions, they are still no closer to determining what happened to Grace's fan until, in an interesting twist of fate, Grace's fan is the last puzzle solved. The relationships between these four women grow stronger as these many crimes reach their conclusion, and the women prove that just because you are over sixty-five doesn't mean you are ready for the rocking chair.
