The World of Ancient Greece

Hull does an excellent job covering the importance of ancient Greece to the ancient civilizations that succeeded them as well as how their many great achievements are in some way a part of our lives today. Greece's early history is described in detail, and the way the geography of their land impacted and dictated much of the way they lived is explained. The social, economic, and cultural development in their civilization through the years of triumph and collapse are impressively told. Many other topics are featured such as life in ancient Greece, religious beliefs, art, architecture, drama, literature, science, philosophy, technology, the birth of democracy, and the Hellenstic Age. There is a one-page timeline of important events in ancient Greek history starting from the beginning of the Bronze Age in 2000 B.C. and ending with the defeat of the last Hellenistic ruler in 31 B.C. There are also many wonderful photographs of ancient Greek artifacts throughout the book and informative period maps, all complemented with detailed captions. Every few pages there are boxes containing added information related to the text on that page. At the end there is a glossary of important words, an index, and a short list of books suggested for further reading on the topic. This is an excellent resource for information on ancient Greece, but because of the more lengthy text, it would most likely be more appealing to older readers.
