Another apocalyptic tale. Like zombies. You know. Popular. We get a lot of them anyway, because each author of each story believes wholeheartedly that his is the special one--that he's the one with the twist, that something to break the overdone genre's mold. They all think it's them. They all think, I'm the right one. Finally, it's me -- not him, me, ME, I have it, I do! And none of them ever have any shame about it. That's because, I suppose, someone's bound to be right eventually, and we all know it. So this is it. Not any of them. Me. Here. I've got your twist. - The more done, the more forgotten, and the more behind left memories of harder reality. The more smothered of burning red and high-piled ashen black, the less known of shamed blue, the greater his satisfaction of himself in his present world-- his world, because he had made it so, through intellect, and through strength thereupon laid. Only because he did, and because he forgot. In a world of paradise, and a world of freedom, and a world of slavery, he rules what he took. Yet no stable surface remains eternally. A feather must one day disturb the waters and spread its subtle waves. A pebble must one day fall and sink to the end. A comet of hellfire must one day come crashing down and burn the shrouding bushel away. One day must be revealed the rainbow vortex of infinite dimension lying beyond. The hands are too great to be called hands, the light too great to be called light. The patterns, the laws, and all we know are broken. The question is why. Because Clarke was right: it is all indistinguishable from the inane. It's all just too much.
