Fascinating study of Grant’s life

I am not a history buff, but I had a family member recommend this book to me and so I thought I’d try it out. What I had no idea of was how captivating this would be. I was blown away by the story of Ulysses S. Grant and would highly recommend this book to anyone not familiar with him beyond the stuff taught in 9th grade history class.

What a wonderful man! Great author!

Grant is probably one of the most misunderstood leaders in US history. Ron Chernow focuses on his character qualities and how they are seen through events. Other authors relate the events and then the character qualities. He was honest to the nth degree; hated granting favors to anyone for their personal kickbacks; and, therefore, had many enemies who would broadcast his most vulnerable weakness: his drinking. Actually, Grant never drank when his leadership was needed, when he was in public, or when his wife, Julia, was with him. The love story of Grant and Julia is a rare one. Very sweet. Soldiers serving under him loved him. He never raised his voice in anger, was fair and kind to all, and won the affection of other commanders who served with him. This is a very reader-friendly text. I highly recommend it.
