Until the death of his widowed daughter, Jack Turner, syndicated columnist and amateur athlete, savored the solitude of his gay lifestyle in Laguna Beach, California. It's winter of 2002. He assumes... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I couldn't put this book down- I read it in one day. What a compelling, heartwarming story of a man's love for his grandson and his effort to raise him in a safe and nurturing environment... the fact that Grampa Jack is gay causes some gut-wrenching twists and turns, but all of them felt real, like this could be happening to your neighbor, right now. What I like best about the book is that the story is told in a straightforward, non-preachy kind of way... I never felt like the author was trying to tell me how to feel or to cajole me in to supporting gay rights as some hidden agenda; instead, he lays down a story that is powerful in its realness, powerful in its simplicity. It's a story about a basic human truth: being a good parent comes from a place of love and commitment, not from the pocketbook or the pulpit. Grampa Jack explores timely topics as more and more grandparents are finding themselves in the role of parent to their grandchildren and as more and more people act on their desire to be adoptive parents, exerting their right to be fairly considered, regardless of race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. Most of us (I hope) by now have recognized that love is color blind; I believe that Mr. Doubenmier's book will nudge many of us toward recognizing that love is blind, period. hh
A Wonderful and Timely Book!

I have known Rocky D. for close to 20 years and when he told me he was writng a novel, I was surprised. You never know what a fiend can do. I didn't realise that Rocky had such a great story in him. Grampa Jack brings to the forefront that all children deserve a happy, safe and loving home! Kids don't care who loves them no matter what the race or age or life style is, just that an adult or adults are there for them. Rocky brings out all the good points in his characters, plus the flaws they have. His story telling is so realist that I was feeling sorry for one of the main characters and wished I could take him aside and tell him to "Chill Out Babe". I hope that everyone who reads this book will enjoy it as much as I have. Also, this storyline will continual in another novel! Joanie Penry
