"It stood there, heart stoppingly close. The thing was big and craggy and dark, silhouetted against the curtain of lights around the perimeter of our camp. There was a small rattling hiss, like the warning of a baby snake.

"Then, so fast I felt the impact before my eyes registered the movement, it struck the Russ sergeant, struck him so hard that most of him stayed where it was for an instant, then gently crumpled to the ground. I felt something warm and wet and thick all over me and I smelled his blood over the rotting stench of the tark. I couldn't scream and I couldn't move. And then it angled its huge body toward me, regarding me with its yellow cat-like eyes.

"I saw a long, solitary claw curve up out of the bulk of that huge silhouette, slowly, like a scythe at harvest. Its head cocked to one side, and it looked at me, almost coy.

"Those merciless eyes glowed yellow in the dim light.

"I knew I was going to die."
