Owen Hatteras (a.k.a. Major Owen Hatteras, a.k.a. Major Owen Hatteras, D. S. O.) was a pseudonymous byline that appeared primarily in The Smart Set magazine, a popular and influential literary monthly published in New York during the first decades of the 20th century. The brainchild of H. L. Mencken and George Jean Nathan, the pseudonym Owen Hatteras was created and managed by them during their tenure as contributors to and later as joint editors of The Smart Set. Among the authors whose works appeared under the Owen Hatteras byline during the years 1912-1923 are H. L. Mencken, George Jean Nathan, Willard Huntington Wright, John McClure, Charles G. Shaw, Thyra Samter Winslow, and other contributors lost to literary history.
