A Sweet Picture Book for Sparking Conversation

This is a very simple, sweet picture book. Although my 5 year old still likes it (and can read it herself!), I think she's simply grown attached to it over the years. It's probably best to buy this for a really young child. The text is extremely brief and starts out "In our family we have good days...bad days." Then goes on with "happy days...sad days, work days...play days, home days...away days" and so on. Each day has it's own page, with one to 4 watercolor and pen pictures per page. It's great for little kids learning the concept of opposites. But as they grew older, my children seemed to get the message that all families have ups and downs--and that not every day is predictably the same. But the best parts, by far, are all the detailed pictures. My kids liked to try to figure out what's going on in each one and then talk about why the family is having a "happy day" on a picnic or why they're having a "sad day" when a pet dies. The pictures have interesting details like a baby nursing in a poster on the wall of the doctor's office or the birthday cake shaped like a house. Of course these details can lead to even more discussion. In fact, sometimes the downside to this book was how long it took to get through it while stopping to study every page!
