Educational and fun

I bought this kit for my 4 year old, who still has another year before kindergarten. The kit comes with three workbooks, a alphabet and numbers chart, several board games, flashcards, and a paperback book about getting ready for kindegarten. I thought the paperback book would be about how to use the materials in the kit, but it was actually about how to emotionally prepare parent and child for the first day of kindegarten, how to communicate effectively with the teacher, etc. There is no information about how and in what order to present the materials (other than instructions for the games and worksheets), so I assume they are to be presented all at once. The workbooks are excellent and well thought out. At first glance I thought the "Letters" workbook would be too hard for my son, as he doesn't recognize his ABC's yet. However, we tried some of the activities and he really enjoyed them. Each activity bundles a different skills together (like letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and picture identification), so if your child is stronger in one area than in others, he/she can use that strength to learn other skills. The games are very good too. My son enjoys them--my only complaint is that the game pieces are made of thick paper and tend to slide all over the place. It is very frustrating! I think the high quality of the educational materials in the kit outweigh the frustrations of the games. The kit comes with a plastic zipper bag to keep everything together, and that has been helpful, as there are a lot of game pieces.
