Geographical Initiative System: learning to use Google Earth

Google Earth is a (free) desktop programme that provides online access to a vast geographical database. It is software that allows users to view the Earth (and other celestial bodies) using a compilation of aerial and satellite photographs. This software enables any user to fly over the Earth and zoom in on a location of their choice. It also offers many other features. Google Earth is a programme owned by Google, formerly produced by Keyhole Inc. The accuracy of the information available varies depending on the geographical region. For example, a city dweller can locate their favourite restaurant and view the city's buildings in 3D, whilst the resolution of the images for much of the Earth is very low. According to Google, coverage is expected to improve rapidly. The 3D modelling of buildings, initially created using SketchUp software, is now generated automatically using algorithms that draw partly on Street View imagery and elevation data.
