Gary Winston Lineker OBE, born in Leicester, England, UK on 30th November 1960, is a sports broadcaster & former professional footballer. His media career began at the BBC, where he's presented the corporation's flagship association football programme Match of the Day since 1999, the longest time of any host. Gary has also been the BBC's lead presenter for live soccer matches, covering international tournaments including the FIFA World Cup. He's also worked for Al Jazeera Sports, Eredivisie Live, NBC Sports Network, and on BT Sport's coverage of the UEFA Champions League. Lineker began his playing career at Leicester City during 1978, where he was the 1st Division's joint top goalscorer of the 1984-85 season. He then moved to league champions Everton where he won both the PFA Players' Player of the Year & FWA Footballer of the Year awards in his first season, before moving to Barcelona, where he lifted the Copa del Rey in 1987-88 then the European Cup Winners' Cup of 1989. Gary joined Tottenham Hotspur that year, where he won his 2nd FWA Footballer of the Year award and the FA Cup, his only major trophy in English football. His final club was Nagoya Grampus Eight, retiring during 1994 after 2 seasons at the Japanese side. Lineker made his England debut in 1984, going on to get 80 caps, scoring 48 goals over an 8-yr international career. He's England's 4th-highest scorer, behind Harry Kane, Wayne Rooney & Bobby Charlton, his international goals-to-games ratio being one of the highest for the country. Gary's 6 goals during the FIFA World Cup finals of 1986, held in Mexico, made him the tournament's top scorer, for which he was given the Golden Boot. Lineker was again integral to England reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup of 1990, scoring 4 goals. He still holds the country's record for goals in the FIFA World Cup finals.
