Book Overview

Love always comes with a price.

After the murder of a dirty Los Angeles detective, St. Louis "Lou-Loc" Alexander finds himself a hunted man. Trying to stay one step ahead of the gas chamber, he flees to New York to pick up the pieces of his life. Fate throws him a curveball when he meets Satin Angelino and falls head-over-heels in love. But although Satin is young and fine, she is keeping a secret that could cost St. Louis his life.

From the author:

The tale I'm about to run down to you is deep, so please pay close attention. It is a tale that reflects a lot of what we go through today as being young men of color. We struggle every day trying to make ends meet, in a world that ain't got a whole lot of love for us. We do what we can when we can in hopes of a better tomorrow, that never seems to come. We do what we have to in order to get the things we need, for ourselves, as well as our loved ones. Whether you hustle, pimp, whore, or pull heist, I feel you. It's all in the name of survival. I feel you because I am you. The endangered species. The young black man. Whether this book sells one copy or one million, it is what it is, only god can dictate fate. But if I can help somebody by putting my thoughts to paper, then I've accomplished something. To those who came up under me, peep-game. To my elders, I've learned from your mistakes, so your lessons weren't wasted nor your warnings unheeded. To those who feel misunderstood or unwanted, walk with me, and know that you're not alone. To those who feel that life has only given one option, there's light at the end of every tunnel. I don't knock nobodies hustle 'cause survival is rule number one. But you gotta understand that we do have options, all we gotta do is look. I know to a lot of people, this probably sounds like some ol' bullshit, but I'm speaking from the heart. A heart just like yours. The heart of a man who has fallen time and again only to rise and continue on, so you know it's possible. Walk with me, my niggaz, as I tell you about my peoples.

I love love love this author

This book had me intrigued from start to end. I read it in almost 1 day. I love the characters and I can envision them as real people. Great read!!!!

I luv this book

I was really surprised by this book. I was expecting the usually and I was mistaken. I luv how he showed the good and bad side of gangs. You will have so many emotions while reading this book. If you luv urban fiction this is a must have book. I will 4ever be a fan of K'Wan now. Get the sequel too.

Not just a Gangsta's tale of the streets but the key to his heart.

Obviously with a title such as Gangsta you shouldn't expect anything less then the gritt & grime of street life, hustlin' & gang bangin'. However, let me start off by saying Gangsta is the first book I read by K'wan and it just so happened to be my FAVORITE street-lit love story. Lou-Loc, the main character in the story is a young street banger hustlin' his way through life, with crazy twists and heavy betrayal all he wants in life is to make it out of the game and settle down with his TRUE LOVE, SATIN! OMG, I cried soo hard in this book. The characters are well-developed so you truly feel their emotions. If you can get past the slang, and the grammar you are in for a REAL TREAT! 5 stars hands down!

Tissues, please????

K'wan has written a heated novel that keeps you curious as to what will happen next. Lou-loc & Satin tried - but the deck was stacked against them from the beginning. The revenge that Gutter ultimately got for his brother was sweet. This book is a page turner from page one. I really enjoyed the character of Cross - MUCH creativity on that one! Mega respect to you, K'wan for your work - you laid it down!....a HIGHLY recommended book for all to read.

Can't put it down

I search for the right words to express this great and well written novel. It's gripping from start to finish. I found myself right there with the characters and the author's abiltity to turn suspense drama, comedy and love into a most read. The pain and agony I felt for the two best friends. Their struggles, and the triumphs over obstacles and lou-loc's thoughts to make it further than what the street gave yet had to deal with the hand he was dealt(life on the street).

he done did it woooooooooooo

This book was one of the greatest books I have read in 2003. I mean I read it in like 2 days. I say this I hope a movie will be made from this book. K'wan is a truly talented blessed brother who tells the whole story. I have lent this book to several people and they are like damn, damn, damn.....I would advise anyone to read this u won't be sorry. I can't wait for his next joint to drop because trust me I will be first on line, rollers still in hair, slippers on that's right the first in line......wooooooooooooooooooo
