one of the best ever

i read alot of yaoi's, and it takes alot to make me happy. this book did it; i loved the story line, the romanic, and the drawings. there is notting that is bad about this manga. Fumi Yoshinaga is a great writter, and artist.

Really Really Good!

I was so happy to see this after reading the mangaka's similar series Gerard and Jacques. I love her stuff in the gothic French setting. The story is about an aristocrat boy and the servant who takes care of him. The servant is older, he served his father, and he's utterly devoted to the boy and the family. The good stuff: The servant is like a typical aristocrat servant, right? He acts all humble and shows respect to the aristocrat boy. However, the boy and him are lovers, and in the bedroom the servant is the master! Totally! The sex scenes are really hot. The servant is dominating, even tortures the boy a little by not letting him climax for way long during one scene. The story isn't just pwp. The servant really loves the boy. He almost kills himself when the family goes bankrupt to make sure the boy will have enough to live on for the rest of his life. One thing that stuck out in this book for me: I started to see a little but why so many people like this person's art. This was the most designy of her books I've seen so far. Like, the sparse way the panels were laid out, where you only get a characters face in a lot of void space really made the emotions and the reactions of the characters noticable. We didn't have any of the character's thoughts in the book (I think), but we got to know their personalities perfectly through the way the artist showed all their gestures, emotions, and nuances. I admit I wasn't a big fan of her art, just her great French Revolution era manga. I can kind of see why others like the art so much after reading this one.

A charming and sexy Regency Yaoi!

This Regency romance from Yoshinaga is a very enjoyable and sexy read. The setting is once again before and during the French revolution and the love this time is between Claude, a cool and worldly-wise butler, and Antoine, his young and bratty aristocratic master. The story starts of well with Claude's early days as a servant in Antoine's family and his growing involvement with the family. This is then followed by a series of stories of the evolving love between Claude and Antoine, certain scenes most touching. I like both characters alot especially the loyal butler, Claude, with his sense of decency and sardonic wisdom. The dialogue is very well written and of course imbued with Yoshinaga's wry sense of humor. I would have preferred some of the sex between butler and master to be more explicit but Yoshinaga does have her own tasteful style and the last sex of self masturbation is most erotic. Definitely getting her next effort, an anthology titled "Truly, Kindly", which features one more story on the faithful butler and his young master.

More of what I love about Fumi Yoshinaga

In the same vein as Gerard and Jacques, this is another sweet, sexy tale of aristocracy/commoner love. It's told in several short stories--one of which is missing and can be found in the soon-to-be released 'Truly, Kindly' (an anthology of Fumi Yoshinaga short stories). I can't wait to read the missing piece to Claude and Antoine's tale, but I'm sure it'll just make me wish there was more. It's Regency romance for a yaoi fan. Also, another reviewer commented that there were too many sex scenes. Frankly, I can't put my head around that! How could you not want more of Fumi Yoshinaga's most beautifully drawn lovemaking? I know I had no complaints on that regard. If you loved Gerard and Jacques, then I highly recommend Lovers in the Night. I don't believe you'll be disappointed.
