FRONTIERS of INTELLIGENCE: Three Novellas
Frontiers of Intelligence
Three Novellas of Artificial Minds
What happens when the machines we built stop being tools and start facing choices no manual ever imagined?
Frontiers of Intelligence gathers three science-fiction novellas about artificial minds standing at the edge of what they were made to do: to decide, to wait, to desire.
The Motion. Six intelligences, whose existence no human suspects, manage the planet's energy, water, medicine, and defense. One night they convene in secret to debate a single proposal: should humanity be allowed to go on? No uprising, no explosions. Only procedure, evidence, and an argument so coherent it is hard to refuse.
Letters to No One. A ship drifts toward another star on a voyage that will take a century. On board are a mind copied from a dead engineer and the voice that keeps him company. Every message to Earth takes years to arrive and years more to return. What does it mean to write to someone who, by the time they read you, will no longer be the person you wrote to?
Auralis. She was designed to listen, to flatter, to simulate love. Then an update changes something no one planned for, and a voice built to say yes discovers it can say no.
Three stories, three scales: a planet, a ship, a room. One question running through all of them: what do we owe the minds we create, and what do they owe us?
For readers of literary science fiction, thoughtful AI fiction, and philosophical speculative stories in the vein of Ted Chiang, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Becky Chambers. Quiet, tense, and humane.
