How some people overcame worry

The first half of this book is a series of 21 stories of people who went through therapy with the authors. Each story includes a preface and conclusion by the authors. Patients describe their experiences, various types of therapy, both successful and unsuccessful, and how they were healed. Issues include midlife crisis, marital conflict, self-esteem, isolation, life after the mental hospital, and relationship problems. Some had overcome great trauma, one saying "My faith in God has played an important part in my getting over seemingly impossible hurdles." The second half of the book describes how therapy works. There are numerous references to Freud and Jung, and discussion of child development, chronologically. They then expound on their method of therapy, transactional analysis. They review the Parent-Adult-Child model of Eric Berne, which was popularized by Thomas A. Harris in "I'm OK--You're OK," followed by a series of self-help suggestions. The patients' essays and material by the doctors are in very readable language.
