This book presents selections from Freud's writings on religion and from the work of five more recent contributors to the psychoanalytic study of religion: David Bakan, Erik H. Erikson, Heinz Kohut,... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This is an excellent introduction to Freudian perspectives on religion. The introduction to Freud's thought is clear and the selections from Freud's writings are good ones. The book has a number of good essays (in addition to Freud's). There is, for example, an exceptionally interesting essay by David Bacan on the book of Job. The only weakness in the book is that other early psychonanalysts contemporary with Freud (such as Otto Rank) are not represented in the anthology. In other words, the text samples the writings of Freud and then jumps to the writings of psychoanalysts working after 1950. But something I especially like about this anthology is the psychological connections it makes between art and religion.
