Forget Me Not
In the villages and spa towns of Bohemia, two families live for decades without knowing that their futures are quietly moving toward one another.
Mathilde Glaser, the strong-willed daughter of a Bergreichenstein architect, falls in love with Michael Fuchs, a glassworker from Annathal. Together they build a family shaped by faith, hard work, devastating loss, and the upheavals that transform the Austro-Hungarian Empire into Czechoslovakia.
A generation later, Anna Stingl grows up in Karlsbad beneath the rule of a volatile mother and a father who recognizes her intelligence but denies her the opportunities granted to his son. Anna works from childhood, protects her younger sisters, and dreams of a life in which usefulness is not the price of safety. Her chance arrives through an application written on paper faintly marked by pressed forget-me-nots.
The man who notices it is Andreas Fuchs.
Their meeting begins a tender courtship conducted through flowers, letters, hotel corridors, and journeys between towns whose names-and national identities-are already beginning to change. Around them, economic collapse and political resentment prepare the way for a darker Europe.
Inspired by family letters, documents, photographs, and stories passed through generations, Forget Me Not is a historical family saga about women's hidden labor, the seductions of nationalism, the search for home, and the fragile objects that carry love across war, displacement, and time.
