In spring 1417, young monk Lorenzo di Marco receives a letter from Isabella, the blacksmith's daughter he hasn't seen since childhood. She has found a strange metal object in the mud-impossibly smooth, unnaturally heavy, marked "TOHNICHI."

The artifact, a torque wrench from a future fusion reactor, shatters his cloistered worldview. When the Inquisition learns of the relic, Lorenzo, Isabella, and astronomer Paolo Toscanelli flee south toward humanist Poggio Bracciolini. On the road they debate Aristotle's cosmos against Lucretius's atoms, while Isabella presses deeper questions of love, presence, and loss.

Sheltering in a cave, Lorenzo has a vision of humanity's scientific quest. Captured by the Inquisition, Isabella refuses to recant and is burned at the stake. Lorenzo recants and survives, forever burdened. Years later, he writes the account she requested.

In 2026, physicist Sara Haroun at ITER receives the manuscript long sought by her mother. She matches Lorenzo's drawing to a lost torque wrench from the reactor's first plasma run. The data reveal the wrench wasn't destroyed-it was sent back in time. Sara chooses not to let the mystery consume her. She returns to her work, carrying the knowledge that some truths remain beautifully unprovable.
