A sequel that never justified its existence

I really enjoyed For the Wolf, so I went into this one excited to see where the story would go. Unfortunately, For the Throne never convinced me that it needed to exist. My biggest issue was that the story became much bigger without becoming much stronger. Instead of building on the world established in the first book, it kept introducing new lore, mythology, and magical concepts without giving enough explanation for how any of it fit together. For every answer, it felt like there were a dozen new questions, and by the end I still didn’t feel like I understood how the world or its magic truly worked. I also struggled to connect with the characters. The first book gave me plenty of time to become invested in Red, but I never felt that same emotional connection to the other major characters here. I understood their motivations, but I didn’t feel them, so many of the story’s biggest moments landed with far less impact than they should have. The plot itself also felt surprisingly predictable. While I didn’t guess every detail, I always felt like I knew the general direction the story was heading, so there was very little suspense or excitement along the way. Several times I thought, “Okay, this is where it’s finally going to get really good,” but it never quite happened. I do appreciate the themes of light and darkness existing within everyone and the idea that people are rarely entirely good or entirely evil. Those were probably my favorite aspects of the novel. I just wish they had been supported by stronger character development and a more cohesive story. Overall, this wasn’t a bad book—it was just a disappointing sequel. For me, For the Wolf stands well on its own, and I’m not convinced this continuation added enough to justify the journey.
