Everyone has a plan for the evening. None of them expects the truth to arrive.

Lola travels from Watford to Milton Keynes to meet Kwashi, a married man carrying a white envelope filled with 2,000. The money is intended to help Jessica, Lola's fiercely independent best friend, although Jessica knows nothing about it and would refuse it if she knew where it came from.

Kwashi has told his wife, Evelyn, that he is attending an office event in London. Evelyn has invented a family celebration in Birmingham so that she can meet Anthony, a man growing tired of being hidden inside the uncertain spaces of her marriage.
