Book Overview

A Barbara Delinsky classic, For My Daughters is a poignant and unforgettable story of the enduring power of love and the tenacious strength of family from the acclaimed New York Times bestselling author. Estranged sisters Caroline, Annette, and Leah St. Clair have spent their lives trying to escape the legacy of their wealthy, aloof, social-climbing mother, Virginia--each losing a certain part of herself in the process. Now, on the eve of her seventieth birthday, Virginia has asked them all to help her get settled into her magnificent new estate on the rocky coast of Maine, a request each sister reluctantly agrees to, thinking it may be her mother's last. But it is Virginia who has something to give to the daughters she neglected in childhood. For amid the glories of a New England summer, three sisters will finally learn the answers to the questions that have troubled them for years . . . and new truths that will stay with them forever.

goood read on sister differences and reconciliation

While this was a good read on how sisters misunderstand each other and their reconciliation and how mothers affect their daughters, it was not one of Barbara's books that I would pick up and read again and again like some of her others.

Great Mother-Daughter Read!

Barbara Delinsky knows women. She is one of the best modern writers for revealing the emotions involved in relationships. The women in this story could be your mother and sisters. They display the underside of sibling rivalry and the misunderstanding of mothers. The layers of the family are peeled away like an onion. The surprises in the plot are page-turners. This is Delinsky at her best.

A wonderful read

This book by Barbara Delinsky is a moving, charming fast read about the coming together of three daughters under false pretenses. The Mother they all thought had treated them poorly redeems herself in a very interesting and thoughtful way. There is so much that anyone reading this can relate to. Ms Delinsky writes very well and is a wonderful story teller. I recommend this book.

Spectacular Read, one of Delinsky's best!

I couldn't put this book down! A friend told me to read this book and I was so glad I did-it's wonderful! I am one of three daughters and I could relate to the characters in this story. Delinsky's descriptions of Maine and the flowers in the garden, etc. I just felt like I was there. She is a very wonderful storyteller.

Very moving!

A wonderful book! Delinsky grabs your interest immediately and keeps it going 'til the last page. I recently started reading her when someone gave me her book "Suddenly" and read 8 more by her. "Coast Road" and "Three Wishes" are also great. This one is about a mother that didn't bond with her daughters while they were growing up, and why, and all the regrets on both sides, as they all reluctantly come together for Mom's 70th birthday. It's a great love story, but much more than that. Expect to shed a tear, and a few smiles. A great book! One you will want to keep on your library shelf.

A touching and truthful look at family relationships

When I read "For My Daughters" I couldn't help but compare the life experiences of the sisters with that of my four sisters. How precious little we truly know of our siblings inner feelings until we are thrown together and united for a common purpose. We all remember what our sisters were like when we were little. It is a remarkable experience to renew those relationships as grown women and come to love and appreciate each other. Barbara Delinsky captures all the emotions of the sisters learning about each other all over again, while learning more about themselves. An excellent book!
