For Ariel
Ariella Vega is a celebrated actress, admired by millions and seemingly blessed with everything a young woman could want.
Except for one thing.
A father.
She has spent her entire life answering the same question:
Where is your father?
The answer has always been simple:
He is abroad.
An accountant.
Nothing more.
But simple answers do not always survive adulthood.
At twenty-five, Ariella begins asking questions her mother has spent decades avoiding. And Magnolia Vega finds herself drawn back toward a past she thought she had buried.
There was a boy named Ariel.
Her childhood friend.
Her first love.
He was the beautiful boy whom everyone noticed, but few ever truly knew.
They grew up together in San Jose West-neighbors, classmates, rivals, and friends. Magnolia watched as Ariel's beauty became both a gift and a burden, drawing admiration, envy, desire, cruelty, and loneliness into a life he never quite knew how to escape.
For twenty-five years, Magnolia has kept her memories of him in diaries, photographs, and letters he has never read.
Now old friends are returning. Old memories are resurfacing. And the daughter Magnolia raised without the truth is beginning to ask questions her mother can no longer answer with silence.
What happened between Magnolia and Ariel all those years ago?
And what is the truth Magnolia has spent a lifetime trying to protect?
Some secrets are kept to protect the people we love.
Others become the very things that break them.
For Ariel is a story that explores love, memory, beauty, cruelty, motherhood, and a man whom the world sees without ever truly understanding.
